Comprehensive Vestibular Assessment Process

Our balance and dizziness evaluations begin with a detailed history of your symptoms and medical background. We then perform a series of specialized tests that may include videonystagmography (VNG) to record eye movements during various positioning maneuvers, computerized dynamic posturography to assess how you use sensory information for balance, and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (VEMP) testing to evaluate specific parts of the vestibular system.

These tests help us determine if your symptoms stem from the inner ear, central nervous system, or other factors, allowing for precise diagnosis and targeted treatment.

At Citrus Hearing Clinic, we work with all three major cochlear implant manufacturers, allowing us to recommend the system that best suits each patient's unique needs and preferences.

Cochlear Americas

Cochlear Americas offers innovative implant systems known for reliability and a strong support network. Their processors feature advanced connectivity options for streaming audio directly from smartphones and other devices. The Nucleus system includes unique features like a slim, off-the-ear processor option and water-resistant accessories for active lifestyles.

Med-EL

Med-EL implants are designed with a focus on preserving delicate inner ear structures and natural hearing when possible. They offer the longest electrode arrays in the industry, which may provide better coverage of the entire cochlea. Their processors are known for excellent music appreciation capabilities and MRI compatibility without magnet removal in many cases.

Advanced Bionics

Advanced Bionics devices, developed in partnership with Phonak, feature sophisticated sound processing strategies that excel in challenging listening environments. Their processors offer excellent water resistance options for swimming and water activities, along with direct connectivity to compatible devices for streaming audio content.

Dizziness and balance issues can result from various conditions including inner ear disorders (like BPPV, Ménière's disease, or vestibular neuritis), certain medications, neurological conditions, cardiovascular problems, or vision disorders. Our comprehensive testing helps identify which of these factors might be contributing to your symptoms.

For most vestibular tests, we ask that you avoid caffeine, alcohol, and certain medications that may affect test results for 24-48 hours before your appointment. You should also wear comfortable clothing and avoid heavy makeup. We'll provide specific instructions when you schedule your appointment based on the tests planned for your evaluation.

Some vestibular tests may temporarily provoke your dizziness symptoms, but this is actually helpful for diagnosis. The tests themselves are not painful, though you might experience brief moments of dizziness or nausea. Our experienced team works to ensure your comfort throughout the evaluation and provides breaks as needed.

A comprehensive vestibular evaluation typically takes 60-90 minutes, depending on which specific tests are performed. We allocate sufficient time to complete all necessary assessments and discuss findings and recommendations without rushing this important process.

Yes, if our testing indicates you have Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), we can often perform treatment maneuvers during the same appointment. These repositioning maneuvers are designed to move displaced calcium crystals in the inner ear back to their proper location, often providing immediate relief from symptoms.

This depends on your specific diagnosis. Some conditions like BPPV may show significant improvement after just one or two treatment sessions. Other vestibular disorders may require a series of appointments for vestibular rehabilitation therapy or coordination with other healthcare providers. We'll discuss your individualized treatment plan after completing your evaluation.
