What is a Hearing Aid?

Hearing aids are small electronic devices worn in or behind the ear that make sounds louder and clearer for individuals with hearing loss. They can help improve your ability to hear and communicate in various environments, from quiet conversations to noisy social gatherings.

Modern hearing aids are equipped with advanced digital technology that can be programmed to your specific hearing needs. They analyze incoming sounds, adjust amplification levels, reduce background noise, and provide clear sound quality. Unlike simple sound amplifiers, hearing aids are medical devices tailored to your unique hearing profile.

Hearing Aid Styles

Hearing aids come in various styles and designs to accommodate different types of hearing loss, lifestyle needs, and personal preferences. Each style has its own advantages and considerations.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

BTE hearing aids sit behind or on top of the outer ear with a tube connecting to an ear mold or tip that fits in the ear canal. These devices are suitable for nearly all types of hearing loss, from mild to profound. They're typically larger than other styles, making them easier to handle and providing space for additional features and longer battery life.

Reciever-in-Canal (RIC)

RIC hearing aids are similar to BTE models but have the speaker (receiver) placed inside the ear canal while the main processing unit remains behind the ear. This design creates a more natural sound experience while keeping the device discreet. RIC models are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss and have become increasingly popular due to their comfort and performance.

Open Fit

Open fit hearing aids are a variation of BTE or RIC models with an open ear canal that allows low-frequency sounds to enter the ear naturally while amplifying high-frequency sounds. This style is ideal for individuals with normal low-frequency hearing but high-frequency hearing loss, offering a more natural sound quality and reducing the plugged-up sensation.

In-the-Ear (ITE)

ITE hearing aids fit completely in the outer ear and are custom-made to the shape of your ear. These devices are more visible than smaller in-canal styles but offer easier handling and more features than completely-in-canal options. ITE models are suitable for mild to severe hearing loss and include features like volume control and directional microphones.

In-the-Canal (ITC)

ITC hearing aids sit partly in the ear canal and are custom-fitted to your ear shape. These devices are less visible than ITE models while providing good sound quality. They're suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss and can include features like directional microphones and volume controls, though the smaller size may make these controls more difficult to adjust.

Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)

CIC hearing aids are nearly invisible, fitting deeply into the ear canal. These discreet devices are custom-molded to fit your ear canal precisely. While they provide excellent sound quality and protection from wind noise, their small size limits battery life and features. CIC models are typically used for mild to moderate hearing loss.

Invisible-in-Canal (IIC)

IIC hearing aids are the smallest and most discreet option, fitting so deeply in the ear canal that they're practically invisible. These devices are removed using a small pull string and must be inserted and removed by the wearer daily. IIC models are suitable for mild to moderate hearing loss but have limited features due to their extremely small size.
